About April Jackson

Founder & Lead Instructor, Jackson Sewing Academy April Jackson brings over 30 years of hands-on experience in the sewing alterations industry to every lesson she teaches. From her early apprenticeship with Duke the Tailor—a master with 50 years of experience—to working in both employee and self-employed roles, April has seen every side of the alterations trade. But more importantly, she's seen what's missing. Throughout her career, April witnessed a troubling pattern: talented sewers learning through slow, informal methods, working inefficiently, and undervaluing their skills. Meanwhile, the alterations industry had no standardized training, no clear curriculum, and no pathway for aspiring professionals to learn the trade properly. So she created one. Filling the Training Gap Jackson Sewing Academy was founded in 2019 with a clear mission: to provide the comprehensive, structured alterations training that the industry desperately needs. April developed a flexible curriculum that teaches not just how to perform alterations, but how to do them efficiently, professionally, and profitably. From basic repairs to advanced bridal alterations, from hemming techniques to zipper replacements, April teaches the systematic methods and time-saving techniques that separate hobbyists from professionals. These are the same methods she learned from master tailors and refined over three decades in the trade. Making Alterations Accessible and Profitable April's mission goes beyond teaching technical skills. She's committed to making sewing alterations accessible to anyone who wants to learn—whether you're sewing for personal use, starting a side business, or building a full-time career. But accessibility doesn't mean undervaluing the trade. April is passionate about teaching students to price professionally, work efficiently, and treat alterations as the skilled trade it truly is. Her courses include not just sewing techniques, but business fundamentals: pricing strategy, customer communication, time management, and building sustainable income. Why April Teaches April chose to prioritize family over a traditional career path, inspired by her single mother's example. But she never stopped honing her craft or sharing her knowledge. Teaching allows her to do what she loves—empowering others to build skills, confidence, and financial independence through sewing. Whether you're picking up a needle for the first time or you're a seasoned sewer looking to refine your techniques and grow your business, April is here to guide you every step of the way. Welcome to Jackson Sewing Academy. Let's raise the standard together.
